Guidelines for Landscape Photography

Seeing a beautiful landscape scene could bring out an enchanting feeling. In photography, landscapes are a common subject but only a few knows how to capture its true beauty. It’s also the most sought entry in a photography contest. Most judges in a photo contest admire photographers who have a skill in capturing the true natural beauty of any kind of landscape. It’s even a great challenge for beginners or amateurs in capturing a landscape scene and that would eventually give them a good lesson to further develop their skills in order to be successful someday and win a photo contest.

Picture Contest

The first basic factor to consider in landscape photography is how you focus the scene. Most landscapes are dramatic; therefore lighting is very critical. If you want to use a landscape scene in a picture contest entry, you must always consider the balance of lighting. Mastering the effects of aperture, ISO, and shutter is also important. Take note that small aperture settings have big numbers. To have a competitive picture contest entry using landscape scenes, aperture must be small in order to maximize the depth of field. However, you also have to remember that small aperture means that small amount light is being allowed to pass through the image sensor; shutter speed and ISO settings must compensate the aperture settings to be able to apply just the right amount of light to highlight the true beauty of the landscape.

Aside from lighting, another factor to consider in landscape photography is the focal point for the viewers. A landscape with out an interesting focal point would look empty. It will leave the photo contest judge hanging and wondering if there is an essential point in the photo. As a photographer, you must determine the appropriate focal point in order for the landscape scene to have a life. Focal points for your landscape entry in a picture contest could be an object like trees, buildings, and even a person that would easily attract the viewers. You must also consider the foreground because its beauty can help your photography contest entry stand out from others. The horizon must be considered carefully because it will be a significant element if the rule of thirds will be used. Rule of thirds is a technique used to improve the composition of the photo.

Winning a photography contest isn’t impossible for a person who has the willingness to learn and be open to challenges.
